When Democracy Gives a Voice to Envy

“(The Ephesians) said: nobody shall be the best among us; and if someone is outstanding, then let him be so elsewhere, and among others.”

Eric Hopper, The Open Society and its Enemies

So democracy gives a voice to envy and class warfare leading to the great equalizer – totalitarianism. The only problem is that those who take power under this tribal form of government are the very people ostracized under democracy – the elites.

As people demand that government take power away from both them, and  those that have earned their way through life, they in effect create an even worse class of elites than they ever intended.

And these elites eventually answer to no one.

The Best Description of our Times

sociaism

Those who see their lives as spoiled and wasted crave equality and fraternity more than they do freedom. If they clamor for freedom, it is but to establish equality and uniformity. The passion for equality is partly a passion for anonymity: to be one thread of the many which make up a tunic; one thread not distinguishable from the others.

No one can then point us out, measure us against others and expose our inferiority. They clamor loudest for freedom are often the ones least likely to be happy in a free society.

Eric Hoffer

This is the most succinct description of our present situation I have seen. could the call to action be based on this?

Could we, do we dare, expose this form of societal cowardice? The picture of the angry liberal driving a Prius down the street with a finger in the air! Does exposing the fear of individual liberty provide a necessary call to action?

Bake Sale for Liberty

protest

It is somewhat terrifying to realize that the totalitarian leaders of our day, in recognizing this source of desperate courage, made use of it not only to steel the spirit of their followers but also to break the spirit of their opponents.

-Eric Hoffer, The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements

This is a human condition that I find terrifying. Have we undertaken an impossible challenge? Is it possible to create a mass movement dedicated to saving individual liberty? Is the inherent contradiction between enlightened self-interest and altruism insurmountable? How do we found the “church of the desperate following?”

What is the answer to a demoralized democracy voting its self out of existence? Is it possible to have a cosmic bake sale for liberty?

The Origins of Liberals and Conservatives

liberal brain

The following story was sent to me from a close relative. The source is unknown.

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

  1. Liberals
  2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery.

That’s how villages were formed. Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BBQ at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement….

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQs and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement. Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. They became known as girlie-men.

Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided. Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass for obvious reasons.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men.

Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn’t fair to make the pitcher also bat. Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Bud or Miller. They eat red meat and still provide for their women.

Conservatives are big game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, engineers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively.

Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living. Liberals produce little. They prefer to govern the producers…. and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America.

They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get something for nothing. Here ends today’s lesson in world history: It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and to more liberals just to piss them off.

And there you have it. Let your next action reveal your true self…

Gay Rights are Civil Rights.

gay rights are civil rightsWe are all biased. But what happens when our belief systems outweigh the story that economics tells us? It can create a confusing story embedded with a hint of guilt?

To explain such diametrically opposite trends within the black community on the basis of whites’ would require us to believe that racism and discrimination were growing and declining at the same time. It is much more reconcilable with ordinary economic analysis.

-Thomas Sowell

To maintain the need for the civil rights “vision” it is also necessary to ignore what the groups have in common. Certain traits seem to run counter to group and individual success and other traits seem to promote group and individual success as well. Making these comparisons would mean that you are either a racist who ignores discrimination or that you believe in the doctrine of innate inability. Close examination of any other possible factors is excluded from the debate.

Today, the newest civil rights “vision” regards the gay community and their ability to marry. Gay rights are human rights, and marriage is a civil right indeed. To strip a people of their right to pursue happiness is wrong on moral and philosophical grounds.

As Americans, it’s just not who we are. Do you notice any parallels between the long hard fight for racial equally, a fight that one can argue continues in some respects, and today’s hot button issue? Aren’t we ignoring what gay and straight groups have in common for the sake of similar biases?

Let’s give inequality a rest once and for all, and focus on restoring liberty. Every time we allow our government, an body that is supposed to work for us, to hamper our quest for civil liberty, we fail. We drop the proverbial ball.

Economics, as Sowell uses it, is the study and measurement of decisions. The gay marriage debate is indeed much more reconcilable through ordinary economic analysis.
